Michelle Ntiamoa

When Michelle Ntiamoa came to Humber College, she had just left another institution and felt like she was starting over. Choosing a post-secondary institution is a heavy decision, and she knows it.

As Humber Student Ambassador, she uses her experience to connect with prospective students.

“A lot of people aren’t sure, and they come to the Open House and they say ‘I don’t know if this is right for me,’” said Ntiamoa, who is in her third year of the Bachelor of Health Sciences Workplace Health and Wellness program

“I get to see their excitement over classes, or campus, or the services we have. When they’re done the tour, lots of them say they’re definitely coming to Humber. It makes my day.”

On November 14, Humber will host the Fall 2020 Virtual Open House. Registration opens a week before the event.

Connecting with current students

Even though registrants won’t have access to the physical campus, they will receive a comprehensive virtual experience that includes interaction with ambassadors like Ntiamoa.

Faculties and service areas will be hosting live sessions featuring presentations by program coordinators and professors. Ntiamoa and her peers will be sitting in on the sessions to answer any questions related to their own experiences and programs.

“We want people to know that if they’re interested in services like tutoring, or accessibility on and off campus, those services will still be available,” said recruitment communications coordinator Kirsten Caldwell.

She notes that Humber  has maintained its focus on student life. Most departments including the Office of SustainabilityIndigenous Education and Engagement department and  IGNITE (student government) have been holding live events and interactive sessions.

Humber has also posted videos on the Virtual Open House website featuring an ambassador from each faculty.

“We’re trying to be as personal as we can. Maybe a guest is interested in what it’s like to be a student or take virtual classes – they can watch the videos before the sessions,” said Caldwell.

Register and win

Despite the changes in format, one popular Open House feature will continue.  Registrants will have the chance to sign up for a draw to win $5,000 towards their Humber tuition. Visit Humber.ca/win for more information on how to enter.
