As Humber celebrates its 50th anniversary, two new jewels of the Lakeshore Campus had their official opening.
The Student Welcome and Resource Centre, located at the corner of Lake Shore and Kipling, and the Fitness Centre, located at 3246 Lake Shore Blvd. W., provides a gateway to all the supports and services available to students and the South Etobicoke community.
Almost all student services are now under one roof in the Welcome Centre – registration, advising, the health centre, counselling, the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre, First Year Experience, the Aboriginal Resource Centre and more – including the campus’s first Starbucks.
The three-floor gym, with funding supported by Ignite Student Life, features free weights, two studios for fitness classes and solo workouts and a floor with just cardio machines (and a view of the lake). Humber North and Lakeshore students, staff and faculty can use the gym for free. Memberships are available to the public.
Also open to the community is the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre, on the first floor of the Welcome Centre.
Through arts, culture, and storytelling, the Interpretive Centre aims to interpret the heritage of the Lakeshore grounds through exhibitions and cultural programming. The centre focuses on education, mental health, indigenous history, environmental sustainability and civic engagement. Its first exhibit, running now, is Behind the Bricks, which explores how to access the former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital’s history – even though nearly all its records were lost when it closed in 1979.
The Interpretive Centre is open Monday to Saturday. Visit www.lakeshoregrounds.ca for more information.
