Global Navigation Issue and Proposed Solution Reported Jan 2023

The default setting to the Future Students menu upon landing on the humber.ca main page is not intuitive to the viewer that they are not actually on the Future Students home page (same would apply to any of the default audience menus using the cookie to remember previous choice)

Proposed Solution

  • Default to “Info for” in the toggle to match the web experience and wording currently on mobile
  • Make the toggle a solid colour, using the watermelon, as it will attract the viewers attention the most
  • Add a directional, benefit-oriented line of copy on load “Select Info for” to access information specific to you
  • Change the cookie to reset on browser close. This would mean that each time a user restarts a new session, they would need to choose from the audience bucket, or enter the site from the offerings on the home page

Anticipated Enhanced User Experience Overall

  • Clarity on where the user is in the navigation defaulting to allow the user to choose first
  • This will give the user an overall awareness of all of the options available to them, whereas they may not have looked before, ie, would an International student know that there is an option for International or would they assume “Future Student” same for Professional Learners.
  • Choosing from the Info for audience toggle will load that landing page and specific menu in front of the Viewer. That action will show that a curated menu has been selected for them, as well as revealing the robust landing page for that audience which may generate more awareness of the options to the viewer
  • The cache being cleared after each experience will ensure that every viewer gets the most fulsome experience with each new session on the site, much like other sites they would visit without a login feature

Issue Reported

Issue: Misunderstanding that the audience toggle is representing the page that the viewer is on

For example, keying in humber.ca, lands a viewer on humber.ca, however the default audience to Future Students appears to be giving the perception that the viewer is on the Future Students landing page.

The solution may be to remove the default toggle to a “Choose Your” toggle to invite the viewer to open the toggle, see all of the available audience options, choose the one that relates to them. When they do this it will automatically take them to that landing page and they will have an understanding of the navigation. It will ensure they still always see the humber.ca landing page first, then choose their journey from there.

ie, Upon entering humber.ca, the audience may believe that they are on the landing page of what is shown in the audience toggle. This applies to all audience options. Current Students, International, Professional Learners etc.

Proposed Solution

1. Load State

  • Default to “Info for” in the toggle to match the web experience and wording currently on mobile
  • Make the toggle a solid colour, using the watermelon, as it will attract the viewers attention the most
  • Add a directional, benefit-oriented line of copy on load “Select Info for” to access a Quick Links menu specific to you.
  • Added a light background behind the text to make it clear what it is associated with

2. Action State

When Info for is selected it would reveal all of the audience choices.

3. Selected State

The selected audience category would stay in solid watermelon as a reminder of menu currently revealed. The extended background connects the quick link items to the audience selection for added clarity.

4. New Browser Session

The page will default to the Info for in the toggle on initial load. After the viewer has selected an audience option, they will be taken to the corresponding landing page and will always have the audience specific menu items visible in the menu on every page they go to afterward. The session will clear after 24 hours where they will once again see the default option.

5. Web vs Mobile Experience

The mobile menu was already using “Info for” as the name of this feature in the rudder menu. This proposed solution would align the two navigation experiences closer.
