Cardiology Nursing - Disease Prevention and Management

This course is designed to provide the nurse with the comprehensive knowledge and skill required to provide holistic nursing and inter-professional care regarding primary and secondary prevention on a wide range of cardiovascular disorders. Objectives build on entry-to-practice knowledge of modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease and patient education. Evidenced based guidelines are emphasized for smoking cessation, exercise, diabetes, obesity, hyperlipidemia, hypertension and heart failure. Attention is given to promoting client wellness and self-care. Ischemic heart disease, diabetic patients with cardiovascular disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and patients presenting with pericarditis and endocarditis are reviewed with a focus on pharmacological and non-pharmacological management. To successfully meet all course learning objectives, learners will be required to engage in a wide variety of independent learning activities such as recorded lectures, podcasts, quizzes and review of current Canadian guidelines for topics discussed throughout the course.
