The Humber Arboretum is pleased to partner with EMG to offer the Eco-Garden Community Workshop Series throughout the year. These workshops are held on the weekend and are free to attend (please register in advance as space is limited).

2024 Eco-Garden Community Workshops

All workshops are on a Saturday from 10:00 AM to noon (90 minute workshop plus 30 minutes for questions).

Please note that for 2024 some workshops are in person and some are online. In-person workshops take place at the Humber Arboretum; online workshops will take place over Zoom.

Invasives and Other Challenges

Join the Etobicoke Master Gardeners and the Humber Arboretum for a free workshop on Invasive Plants, pathogens, and other concerns. Learn the definition of an invasive plant, as well as the ecological problems they cause. Learn how to remove existing invasive plants, how to prevent new ones from moving in, and about suitable alternatives such as native plants to support the development of a healthy, diverse ecosystem. We will also touch on some of the newer pathogens, and diseases that infest our gardens.

Join Etobicoke Master Gardeners and the Humber Arboretum for an on-site walking tour of the Humber Arboretum’s Trees & Shrubs. Learn about many of the native trees & shrubs at the Arboretum, benefits to the environment and wildlife, how to identify the tree or shrub, and considerations for incorporating them into your garden. Wear your walking shoes and dress for the weather and enjoy the gardens.

 

Let's Get Growing: Plant Propagation, Seed Saving, and Growing from Seeds

Join the Etobicoke Master Gardeners and the Humber Arboretum and "Let's Get Growing".  You'll learn about growing your own plants, why we grow our own plants, how to get growing from seeds, propagation, divisions, and cuttings. We'll also look at ideas on creative ways to garden, the importance of soil health, learn what you can grow, and don't forget about key considerations for maintaining your plants. 

 

Pruning: Making the Cut

In-person at the Humber Arboretum

Join Etobicoke Master Gardeners and the Humber Arboretum for a free workshop on Pruning. We will take a hands-on look at pruning fundamentals, learn about the importance of pruning, proper pruning techniques and some of the common tools and tool care. Specific examples of what plants to prune and when to prune them will be demonstrated. You are encouraged to bring in your favourite secateurs (pruners), if you want to sharpen them and practice a cut or two!

There will be an optional short tour afterwards for those who are interested.

Sustainable Gardening and Climate Change Considerations

 Join the Etobicoke Master Gardeners to learn how to have a successful and sustainable garden. Learn how to select plants with a focus on native plants, what plants need to thrive, how to prepare your soil, watering strategies, understand your climate, considerations of climate change, plant hardiness zones, and changes in the sun exposure in your garden with increased development.

Indoor Plants for All Occasions

Join Etobicoke Master Gardeners and the Humber Arboretum and get started with indoor plant gardening. Learn how to create your own indoor garden oasis by selecting indoor plants, learn about the benefits of indoor plants, how to care and grow them successfully, some of the challenges of indoor gardening, pet-friendly plants, and meet some of the  common and more unique and tropical indoor plants, along with plants to decorate your home for the holidays.
