Become a Humber Arboretum Creative

Would you like to improve your communication skills or build your portfolio while you learn about the natural world? Are you eager to meet new people and be part of a team? No matter what your program of study, students of Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber are invited to apply to join the Arb Creatives, where you will learn about local ecosystems and develop your media communication skills. The Arb Creatives are a branch of the Arboretum's Learning by Leading™ program.

About the Arb Creatives

Arb Creatives practice their skills in graphic design, photography, videography, writing, and other mediums to help more students learn about the Humber Arboretum and the natural world around them.

Arb Creatives spend the fall semester getting to know the 250 acre Humber Arboretum and the plants and wildlife that live there, all while they learn and practice media skills with small exercises and projects. In the winter semester the Creatives get to pitch a larger project on something that has captured their interest during the fall, and work on it with the support of their peers and the Arb Creative mentors.

The Arb Creatives go Virtual for 2020/2021

This year, the Arb Creatives program will support the participation of both students who are on learning on campus and those who are studying remotely. A curated selection of asynchronous online tutorials will be combined with virtual team meetings.

Expand your post-secondary experience by taking part in this two-semester, fully remote service learning experience, where as a team you will:

  • Learn about the Humber Arboretum and its many projects and initiatives, along with local ecology and issues of environmental sustainability
  • Complete online training to develop a variety of creative and professional skills
  • Take part in virtual team meetings to pose questions, share ideas, and provide feedback
  • Share what you've learned through small practice projects, some of which may be shared through the Arboretum's official social media channels targeted
  • With the support of the team, develop a larger creative project to explore the topic and medium that most captures your interest during the year

The Arb Creatives are part of Learning by Leading™ at the Humber Arboretum, a program in which students move from learning, to participating, to leading others in a laddered approach. Joining Learning by Leading™ will help you build knowledge and skills in a supportive team environment.

What is a Co-Curricular Record?

Provided to students by Humber College or the University of Guelph-Humber, the Co-Curricular Record (CCR) is a formal record of a student's skill development that has taken place outside of the classroom.
