Applied Research Projects hosted at the Barrett CTI

Project: Low Voltage Power Supply Design

FAST Electrical Engineering faculty and students are collaborating with industry partner SEW-Eurodrive to research several methods of energy harvesting from high power motors. The team plans to use methods such as mechanical vibration, temperature gradients, natural or artificial light, elevated levels of noise and electromagnetic induction to achieve the target output of 5V/2W that is needed to power a sensor board for condition monitoring. See a video of the team in action!

Project: Harmonic Mitigating Device and Power Factor Corrector

Objective is to develop a cost-effective harmonic mitigating device that would eliminate harmonics and improve the system power factor to unity. The project is in collaboration with industry partner - Rex Power Magnetics.

Project: Nahanni Steel

Develop an automated cell to inspect manufactured pieces for Nahanni Steel. The technical objective is to integrate 3D vision systems into the manufacturing process to enhance productivity, quality assurance, and customer satisfaction.

Project: Resonator Testing

A resonator is an electromechanical device that has a built-in electrical circuit with mechanical vibration movement. In this research, a novel resonator will be tested to characterize the frequency response and the structure.

Project: Ring Vac and Air Amplifier

Nex Flow Air Products Corp. is a manufacturer of compressed air-operated products made to improve plant efficiency, improve energy efficiency, improve quality, and enhance the environment. The main outcome of the research is to help Nex Flow finalize a new product and solve their challenges in the design and optimization. It will try to optimize compressed air hole size to minimize air and maximize vacuum effects.
