BSSE connects, engages, builds community and empowers students through cultural celebrations, wellness activities, conversation circles, mentorship, leadership opportunities, workshops, and social events. A podcast series designed to create safer, braver spaces to engage in conversations that explore culture, identity, experiences, current events and popular trends in social media. The goal is to bridge current gaps between our diverse communities through dialogues of understanding, and create more inclusive and sustainable learning environments.
An event that occurs at the beginning of each semester to welcome Black identify students to BSSE and build community through participation in various games and activities.
An identity-based mentorship initiative that supports emerging Black learners through transformative relationships with experienced Black professionals. Rooted in shared lived experiences, using a holistic approach, the program helps mentees navigate systemic barriers, build skills, and strengthen their sense of identity. Through holistic mentorship, participants receive guidance in three key areas:
Students also have the opportunity to receive a $1,000 scholarship through Awards and Alumni in partnership with the Black/African Employee Resource Group.
A commencement event to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of Black identifying students. The event features a keynote speaker, graduate tribute, food and music.
A community event that brings together students, faculty and staff to celebrate Black Heritage Month. It features music, performances, cultural food and reflections on the legacy and future of Black culture, heritage and community.
A program focused on holding space for Black identifying LGBTQ+ students where they can connect, engage in conversation, share resources and build community.
A workshop series designed to create a welcoming and supportive space for Black identifying students where they can make connections, share experiences, and build community.
A program that highlights and recognizes black identifying students for their involvement both on and off-campus.
A program that offers students with the opportunity to get involved and make a difference on-campus. Volunteers support with activities, events, outreach and workshops. Some benefits to volunteering includes:
A community event that brings together local Black Owned Businesses to share products, services and resources.
A community event that provides students with the opportunity to perform and showcase their talents. The event features musicians, dancers, actors, spoken word artists, rappers, comedians and various activities.
A monthly community event in partnership with Brands for Canada that provides students with free new clothing, shoes and accessories.
