Young Africa Works in Kenya: Recognition of Prior Learning
From Skills to Credentials: Scaling RPL in Kenya
Sector & Service Type: TVET – Workforce Development / Capacity Building and Policy Advisory
Summary: Between 2020 and 2024, Humber and partners helped Kenya create a national framework to recognize skills gained outside formal education, opening pathways to employment for hundreds of youth and embedding gender equality into the system.
Context & Challenge: Kenya’s informal Jua Kali sector teems with skilled workers, but without credentials, many — especially women and marginalized groups — were excluded from better jobs and further training. This skills recognition gap limited economic participation and slowed progress toward national growth goals.
Partnership Approach: Led by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority with Humber, NorQuest, and Red River College Polytechnic, the project drew on global RPL expertise to co-create tools, train implementers, and build Centres of Excellence. The Mastercard Foundation and CICan funded the work under the Young Africa Works–Kenya program.
Solution in Action: Over four years, partners developed national RPL guidelines, created gender equality protocols, trained 510 trainers and officials, and established 25 Centres of Excellence. Despite COVID-19 disruptions, blended delivery and local networks kept momentum strong.
Impact & Outcomes:
- 800 youth received RPL credentials.
- Institutional capacity strengthened across 25 TVETs.
- Gender equality embedded in national RPL policy.
The result is a scalable model linking informal skills to formal employment, boosting inclusion and economic opportunity.
Voices from the Project: “Without a certificate, I couldn’t apply for many jobs. Now I have proof of my skills — and more opportunities.” – James Mwangi, Welder
TVET - Energy
Kenya Education for Employment Program (KEFEP-02)
Empowering Youth through Competency-Based Training in the Energy Sector
Sector & Service Type: TVET – Energy / Capacity Building
Summary: From 2017 to 2022, Humber and Canadian partners worked with three Kenyan polytechnics to deliver industry-ready training in energy and trades, transforming both teaching capacity and youth employability.
Context & Challenge: Kenya’s polytechnics needed to meet fast-changing labour market demands in energy and industrial sectors. Skills gaps, gender disparities, and a lack of environmental integration limited the relevance of training.
Partnership Approach: Canadian and Kenyan institutions co-developed Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) programs in Industrial Plant Operations, Solar PV, and Building Artisan trades. The approach embedded gender inclusion, sustainability, and applied research from the start.
Solution in Action: Faculty received over 200 hours of technical and pedagogical training; seven new CBET courses launched; modern labs and a steam turbine plant installed; and institutional committees for gender, environment, and industry engagement established.
Impact & Outcomes:
- 880 youth trained.
- 200 faculty certified in CBET pedagogy.
- 120 hours of technical training for the Programmable Logic Controller course at SNP and TKNP for trainers
- 80 hours of Hydraulic/Pneumatic Systems and Steam Turbine training
- 80 hours of Solar PV training
- Sustainability and gender inclusion became institutional norms. Graduates gained market-ready skills, and institutions now serve as models for integrating inclusion, sustainability, and innovation in TVET.

Healthcare - Workforce Development
Hungkuang University: Professional Communication for Healthcare
From Classroom to Care: Bridging Language and Practice in Healthcare
Sector & Service Type: Healthcare – Workforce Development / Corporate Training
Summary: In 2025, Humber helped Hungkuang University nursing students in Taiwan master professional English communication for healthcare, preparing them for safe, confident practice in international settings.
Context & Challenge: Taiwan’s bilingual nation initiative aims for full integration of English into higher education. Hungkuang’s nursing students needed specialized language skills for clinical environments abroad — without them, miscommunication could risk patient care and limit global employability.
Partnership Approach: Humber provided curriculum design, instructor training, and PVQC certification to build both student competence and institutional EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) capacity.
Solution in Action: A 6-week blended course combined medical vocabulary, crisis communication, interprofessional collaboration, and documentation training, reinforced through role-play and case studies.
Impact & Outcomes:
- Students earned PVQC certification.
- Greater confidence in clinical communication.
- Hungkuang strengthened its EMI healthcare training capacity. The program supports Taiwan’s bilingual goals while preparing graduates for the demands of global healthcare.
