Purpose/Rationale:
This policy outlines the official position of the Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning (hereafter referred to as "Humber" or "the College") on the ethical use of animals in research.
In Canada, animals used in research and teaching must be cared for and maintained in accordance with applicable laws and requirements outlined by The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) and the Tri-Council Memorandum of Understanding.
Scope:
The policy applies to all College research and teaching activities and has been developed to comply with eligibility requirements of federal funding agencies—Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)—concerning the ethical use of animals in research.
Definitions:
Animal: Refers to any living non-human vertebrate and any living invertebrate of the class cephalopoda, including free-living and reproducing larval forms used for research, teaching, breeding, or testing purposes.
Policy:
-
Although Humber employees have never engaged in college-sanctioned teaching or research involving animals, the College subscribes in principle to the humane treatment of all animals used in research, instruction and testing, as outlined in the guidelines and policies of the CCAC.
-
Humber does not currently intend to sanction any future educational or research activities that would involve the use of animals.
Monitoring:
The Dean of the Office of Research and Innovation and the Associate Vice-President, Academic are responsible for monitoring this policy according to the schedule established by the Senior Vice-President Academic’s office.
