Foundations of Everyday French

Certificate of Completion

Program Code: FREN

The Foundations of Everyday French certificate focuses on acquisition of one of the most spoken languages of the world and one of the official languages of Canada in a very interactive and engaging online learning environment. This certificate will enable learners to achieve their goals whether they want to learn French to travel, to enhance their career or business, to help their children in their French learning at schools or just to have fun. The courses focus on comprehension, written and spoken expression, French vocabulary, and French grammar, while incorporating interesting aspects from French culture. Courses familiarize learners with a wide range of vocabulary, expressions and structures in order to be able to give basic personal information about yourself and your family; describe yourself, others, and things; to ask for basic information and how to respond accurately. Focusing on speaking, listening, reading and writing, the learners explore the themes of travel, dining, socializing, neighbourhood and community.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the certificate, the learners will able to:

  • Greet people, make introductions and descriptions of self and family.
  • Describe everyday activities.
  • Ask informative questions and respond appropriately.
  • Express likes, dislikes and preferences.
  • Talk and ask questions about professions and hobbies
  • Understand actions done in the past tense.
  • Communicate in the contextual settings of shopping, dining out and travel.

Language Equivalency

This certificate is equivalent to the A2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) level 4.

Method of Delivery

This program will be offered through both synchronous and asynchronous delivery modes. Learners will meet their instructor weekly for a live, two-hour interactive synchronous session. In addition, learners will also engage in asynchronous learning.

French Language Placement Test

The placement test was designed to help you informally assess your French language proficiency to gain a better idea of which course to begin your French studies. If you have no previous French language experience, you are welcome to take the test but should register for FREN 100 - Foundational French 1. The placement test focuses on knowledge of basic grammatical structures; it does not evaluate oral and written skills. The placement test contains 50 multiple-choice questions. It is recommended that you take the test without the use of any study aids to obtain a more accurate result. Take the French placement test now.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Learners with prior learning in the French language as confirmed by the placement test may be eligible for a course credit in recognition of their prior learning. The placement test will indicate the recommended French course that learners should register into. If the placement test recommends that a learner starts the certificate at the second course (FREN 101) or the third course (FREN 102), then the learner can apply for a PLAR for the first course (and possibly the second course). The learner should first register for the recommended course after taking the placement test, then send an email to cplliberalarts@humber.ca to apply for the PLAR. There is a fee of $86 per course associated with the application for PLAR.
