2017 Innovation of the Year Award Winners

INNOVATION OF THE YEAR AWARD 2017 The Innovation of the Year Award recognizes employees who have designed and implemented significant innovations that positively impact the education of students at Humber College.  This years’ Humber Innovation of the Year Award recipients are Anthony VanHoy in recognition of his “Math applets and their uses in Humber math courses” project and the PRC Faculty in recognition of their “Humber PRC Career Excellence” project. Anthony introduced math applets, which are computer generated interactive demonstrations, to provide students with additional tools for studying. This tool blends symbolic interpretations with visual and spatial representations. Anthony created a simple math applet that allows users to make direct modifications to variables in a sine or cosine function and see the changes instantly. This project has provided a repository of math related applets for Humber College students and faculty use. It is available to all with access to the internet and a desktop or laptop. It takes into consideration the uniqueness of the PR industry, specific requirements and the desire of students to find the perfect fit for a PR career. The PRC faculty connect students with PRC grads and personal industry contacts, review resumes, portfolios and writing samples, and coach students prepping for interviews. Since its inception in 2016, this initiative has exceeded the mandate of applied learning by demonstrating, acting, and implementing a formalized process of connecting the students to the industry in a meaningful and impactful way. As a result of its proactive approach, this initiative helps to make a positive and lasting impression for the students. The collaboration between the Department of Athletics and Recreation and the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre is the first innovation of its kind in the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA). The purpose of this innovation was to create an inclusive environment.  This inclusiveness enhances the Humber community’s social and competitive experiences by promoting diversity of culture, race, religion, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. After establishing guidelines and requiring students and staff to attend training courses regarding hazing and bullying, the facilities have seen an 18 per cent increase in memberships once the campaign became active.
