Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (2005) Update

April 5, 2012

Humber College continues to promote a barrier-free learning, working, and living environment. Humber is required to comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA). The AODA outlines accessibility requirements to ensure that goods, services and facilities in Ontario are accessible to everyone. To date, the Ontario Government has released Accessibility Standards in four areas: Customer Service, Information and Communication, Employment and Transportation. Requirements within each Accessibility Standard will come into effect every year until 2025 and will support Humber in increasing accessibility to all its constituents.

Information and Communication Standard

The Information and Communication Standard is the second Standard to be released by the Ontario Government. The Standard focuses on providing accessible information and communication to people with disabilities. The goal of the Standard is to establish requirements that prevent and remove barriers for people with disabilities when creating, distributing, and receiving information and communication to and from Humber College.

What is Humber required to do?

The Information and Communication Standard contains several requirements that will be introduced between 2012 and 2025. For 2012, Humber is required to provide the emergency plans, procedures and public safety information that it makes available to the public in an accessible format upon request.

  • An accessible format may include, but is not limited to, large print, recorded audio, and electronic format
