At Humber College, we are committed to advancing knowledge and understanding of aging within the context of community living. The Aging in Community Education & Research (ACER) hub represents our dedication to exploring innovative solutions and educational strategies that support aging in community. By fostering a collaborative environment, ACER seeks to bridge gaps between research, practice, and real-world applications, ensuring that our communities are inclusive, supportive, and adapt to the needs and interests of older adults.
Consistent with this commitment, we host a Community of Interest (CI) that convenes every third Thursday of the month. The next Community of Interest (CI) meeting is scheduled for noon on Thursday, March 21, 2024, and we invite all those interested in contributing to this vital conversation to join us.
During our recent CI gathering on Thursday, February 15, 2024, participants shared valuable perspectives and innovative ideas, including:
- Exploring intergenerational housing models and the role of caregivers in family dynamics, proposing a global student-led data collection initiative that focuses on existing models and potential strategies.
- Investigating the use of virtual reality to support adults with dementia, highlighted by an upcoming Humber College event dedicated to this innovative approach: Humber Emerging Technology & Dementia Design Challenge
- Sharing insights on the efficient use of resources and "Men's Shed" for mental health strategies targeting older men, advocating for the integration of older adults in the workplace.
- Discussing the potential of "social prescribing" and holistic approaches to aging.
- Examining the effectiveness of technology-enabled exercise sessions for older adults.
- Advocating for "nature prescribing," mindfulness, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as alternative health strategies outside of long-term care settings.
- Encouraging the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in developing solutions for older adults.
- Sharing research and ideas on the role of interior design in enhancing living environment
