Call for Participants in Massage Therapy Research

The third year massage therapy students are looking for participants for their final year research projects. If you would like to help these students learn what it is like to conduct research, and receive free massage therapy in the process, contact Amanda Baskwill, Program Coordinator (amanda.baskwill@humber.ca; 416.675.6622 x.5173) or Felicia Bremner, Clinic Manager (mtclinic@humber.ca; 416.675.6622 x.5055). Individuals who complete the study process will receive a gift certificate to the Massage Therapy Clinic at Humber College to use following the study. Effects of Massage Therapy on Pain in a Patient with Rheumatoid Arthritis
Study #:  14MT001
We are looking for an individual who has been clinically diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (documentation must be provided) in the upper limb and who complains of pain and difficulty while preforming their activities of daily living. The participant must not have any other arthritis conditions such as osteoarthritis. The length of the study is 6 weeks.
The treatments would take place on Thursday.


Effects of Massage Therapy on Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Study #:  14MT002
We are looking for an individual who was been clinically diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (documentation must be provided), who has pain in joints, swelling in the ankles, and has noted stress, anxiety, or depression. Individuals who have been hospitalized recently along with open wounds, rashes, ulcers, edema in the ankles with a history or ankle injury or surgery, and in remission during the case study will not be eligible to take part in the study. The length of the study is 6 weeks.
The treatments would take place on Wednesday.


Effects of Massage Therapy on people with Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Study #:  14MT003
We are looking for someone who has been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and who is a student. Participants who have severe anxiety and an inability to control both physical and emotional outbursts will be excluded from the study. The length of the study is 12 weeks.
The treatments would take place on Tuesday.


The Effects of Massage Therapy on Panic Attacks in a Patient with Anxiety
Study #:  14MT004
We are looking for an individual who had been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder by a physician. The participant is required to have a minimum of 2-3 panic attacks a week and moderate anxiety. If you have social anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder you will not be eligible for this study. The length of the study is 8 weeks.
The treatments would take place on Wednesday.


The Effects of Massage Therapy on Male Athlete Flexibility
Study #: 14MT005
We are looking for a male rugby player who plays a forward position and has a decrease in lower limb flexibility. Individuals who are participating in extra activities that focus on increasing flexibility along with previous groin injuries, hip/knee dislocations/surgeries, joint/muscle instabilities, hyper-flexibility, arthritis or any other conditions that could produce lower quadrant pain or instability will be excluded from the study. The length of the study is 10 weeks.
The treatments would take place on Thursday.


Effects of Massage Therapy on Sleep in a Pregnant Women
Study #:  14MT007
We are looking for a female between the ages of 18-34 who is in their second trimester of pregnancy and reporting sleep disturbances. If you have a high-risk pregnancy or smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, or partake in any other drug substance you will not be able to partake in this case study. Also, if you are suffering from severe nausea, weight loss and dehydration you will also not be eligible to take part in this case study. The length of this study is 10 weeks.
The treatment would take place on Wednesday.


Effects of Massage Therapy on Sleep in a Patient with Fibromyalgia
Study #: 14MT008
We are looking for an individual who has been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia for a minimum of one year. The patient must experience restless sleeps due to having Fibromyalgia. The patient will be excluded from the study if there Fibromyalgia medication has changed in the past six months or if they have any sleep disorders secondary to a condition other than Fibromyalgia. The length of the study is 11 weeks.
The treatments would take place on Tuesday.


The Effects of Massage Therapy on a Patient with Chronic Tension Headaches
Study #:  14MT009
We are looking for an individual who has a medical diagnosis of chronic tension headaches (documentation must be provided). Patients will be excluded from the study if they have headaches secondary to another condition or if they have any other types of headaches (i.e. sinus headaches, migraines, etc.). The length of the study is 8 weeks.
The treatments would take place on Thursday.


Effects of Massage Therapy on a Women with Postpartum Depression
Study #:  14MT010
We are looking for a female who has recently given birth and has been diagnosed by a physician with postpartum depression. Those females who have a prior diagnosis of clinical depression, have a residual condition related to lumbar epidural and any other additional illnesses that could render the results inconclusive will be eliminated from the study. The length of the study is 6 weeks.
The treatments would take place on Wednesday.


The Effects of Massage Therapy on Symptoms in Adults with ADHD
Study #:  14MT011
We are looking for an individual who has been medically diagnoses with ADHD. Those individual who are not cognitively aware of their surroundings and who are not self-aware will be eliminated from the study. The length of the study is 8 weeks.
The treatments would take place on Tuesday.


Effects of Massage Therapy on a Patient with Tendonitis
Study #: 14MT012
We are looking for an individual who have been clinically diagnosed by a health care professional with tendonitis. You may not be eligible to attend if you have a related diagnosed conditions and surgery on the affected joint. The length of the study is 10 weeks.
The treatments would take place on Thursday.


Hyperkyphosis: Posture Normalization by use of Massage Therapy with Remedial Exercise
Study #:  14MT013
We are looking for an individual who presents with an exaggerated kyphotic curve of the thoracic spine, rounded shoulders, shortened muscle in the anterior chest and lengthened/weakened muscles in the back. Those individuals who have additional structural conditions such as scoliosis or degenerative disc disease along with structural hyperkyphosis, pregnant women and those who are seeing another health care professional will be eliminated from the study. The length of the study is 10 weeks. It will include both treatment and remedial exercise.
The treatments would take place on Wednesday.


Effects of Massage Therapy on Range of Motion and Function in a Patient with Frozen Shoulder
Study #:  14MT014
We are looking for someone who has been clinically diagnosed with frozen shoulder within the last two to eight months. The individual who takes part in the study is required to have no pain at rest in their shoulder. If you have a history of dislocation or injury resulting in immobilization within the last year or conditions that contraindicate joint mobilization, you may not be eligible to participate. The length of the study is 8 weeks.
The treatments would take place on Tuesday.


Effects of Massage Therapy on Pain in a Patient with Scoliosis
Study #:  13MT016
We are looking for someone who has been clinically diagnosed with functional scoliosis (documentation must be provided). In addition, the participant must report symptoms of pain, which cause them limitations in their activities of daily living. Those who have structural scoliosis or who have had corrective surgery of the spine that involves the fusion of the vertebrae or insertion of pins, plates etc. will be eliminated from the study. Also, those who have other spine conditions that present with pain (i.e. degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis) will also be eliminated from the study. The length of the study is 7 weeks.
The treatments would take place on Tuesday.
