Chemical Safety at Humber

November 23, 2012

Do you work with chemical products or hazardous materials?

Do you know what the potential hazards are and how to protect yourself and others?

Before using any product, whether it is WHMIS-controlled, or purchased off the shelf as a consumer product, it is important to know the hazards associated with that material and how to protect yourself and people around you.

Remember these important safety tips:

Tips for Using, Handling and Storing Chemicals Safely:

  • Read the product’s label and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) before using the product and as often as necessary to remain familiar with the product’s hazards and how to use it safely.
  • Report any missing MSDSs or missing/damaged labels to your supervisor.
  • Follow the instructions and safe work practices provided by your supervisor.
  • Be familiar with the health and safety procedures to follow in the event of fire, chemical spill, or medical emergency.
  • Use all required personal protective equipment (PPE) which may include items such as gloves, safety goggles, face shield and respiratory protection.
  • Be aware of chemical incompatibilities. Mixing incompatible chemicals together can initiate dangerous and unpredictable reactions.
  • If you are unsure, ask your supervisor and get the information you need.

Employees who work with WHMIS-controlled products, or supervise those who do, are required to complete Humber’s WHMIS Blackboard training course. Course registration is coordinated by Health and Safety Services.
