Student Voices on Sexual Violence Survey

Meg Houghton, Associate Dean, Student Wellness and Equity, Kelly Jackson, Associate Vice-President, Government Relations and Communications and Jen McMillen, Dean of Students discussed the Student Voices on Sexual Violence Survey presently underway.

With the introduction of Bill 132, Sexual Violence and Harassment Action Plan (2016), Humber full-time students have been emailed an online survey which is intended to gather information about how students perceive, understand and respond to sexual violence, as well as how colleges and universities address sexual violence. The survey is being conducted by CCI Research, on behalf the Ontario Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development. Participation is voluntary and students can stop at any point. The survey is available until the end of March and so far over 1500 students have completed the survey.

Students are asked for their perspectives and experiences with: sexual violence on campus, consent for sexual activity, their beliefs and knowledge with regards to sexual violence, and education and prevention. The goal of the survey is to help Humber College to: better understand student experiences and perceptions of sexual violence, evaluate the efficacy of services and support available to students who have experienced sexual violence, improve policies and processes for responding to sexual violence, better understand how bystanders in the campus community can act to prevent sexual violence, and reflect on social dynamics that contribute to sexual violence.

Results will be returned to Humber in the spring and will be reviewed by the Executive and the Sexual Violence Taskforce to assist with planning policy, procedure review as well as communication to the Humber community.

New Programs: Carpentry and Renovation Techniques, Building and Construction Technician and Construction Engineering Technology

Michael Auchincloss, Associate Dean, School of Applied Technology presented three new programs in the School of Applied Technology.

The success of the Home Renovation diploma has led to the development and launch of the following programs: Carpentry and Renovation Techniques a two semester certificate program which is equivalent to a Level 1 Apprenticeship; Apprenticeship as a Building Technician a two year diploma with an equivalent to a Level 2 and 3 Apprenticeship as a Building Construction Technician; and an advanced diploma in Construction Engineering Technology. The school is promoting the programs as “stackable credentials” where a student can complete one program and advance to the next program upon completion. The School of Applied Technology is exploring possible pathways to degrees in the future.

The programs are designed to build knowledge in the Carpentry trade, and provide opportunities to complete a non-union Apprenticeship leading to a Red-Seal Certification as a General Carpenter.

The initial intake for this program will be 40 students and it is expected that acceptance into these programs will be highly competitive. The programs will be located at Carrier Drive. The target market will be potential candidates from the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, Dual Credit students, Second Career as well as pathway opportunities from other SAT programs such as HVAC, Engineering, Electrical and Landscape. The opportunities provided by these pathways will support the needs of students and the booming construction industry in the GTA–including the need to fill the depleting labour shortage in this area.
