Copyright Tip: You Can “Mash-Up” Content for Your Students

The “Mash-Up” exception was added to the Copyright Act in 2012 and allows users to combine two or more works in the creation and distribution of a new work. This means that you can combine and modify short excerpts, Internet content and music or video clips as long as the original sources are from the copyright holder and the sources are cited.
Examples of mash-ups include:

  • A handout combining short excerpts from print sources and Internet sites
  • A PowerPoint presentation using online video clips and content from Humber Libraries databases

For more mash-up examples go to library.humber.ca/copyright/mash-ups and email us at copyright@humber.ca if you have any questions.
