Denise Gardner, Director, Professional Development

I am pleased to announce that Denise Gardner has been appointed to the position of Director, Professional Development, effective August 6, 2013.

Since joining Humber in 2006, Denise’s career has included a variety of teaching roles in both diploma and degree level courses in the School of HRT and Guelph-Humber. Her outstanding student feedback, innovations, scholarly teaching and learning and her stewardship of professional development are reflected in her achievements both in and out of the classroom.

In the last three years, Denise has been seconded, part-time, to The Centre for Teaching and Learning where she has worked on a variety of projects including supporting the development of faculty teaching international students, consulting with faculty on internationalizing their curriculum and sharing best practices in teaching and learning.

Denise has been honored with the college’s Teaching Excellence Award (2012) given to only one exemplary faculty member per year, The Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education College Sector Education Award (2011), and most recently The John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Award from the League for Innovation in the Community College (2013). Denise’s academic preparation includes an undergraduate degree from the University of Waterloo, a graduate degree in Neuroscience from the University of Western Ontario and a Master’s degree in Education from Medaille College, NY.

Key responsibilities in her role as Director will include new faculty on-boarding and professional development, and ongoing professional development for all full and part-time faculty. Denise will work to enhance and support the learning process through the use of evidence-based practice, educational technology and the development of alternative delivery strategies. In addition, Denise will play a lead role in expanding Humber’s reputation as a leader in polytechnic education and a provider of exceptional teaching and learning delivery to all students.

Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Denise to her new role.
