ETS Reorganization and Sailing Centre Closure Message

October 8, 2015

Message from Laurie Rancourt, Senior Vice-President, Academic and Alister Mathieson, Vice-President, Advancement and External Affairs

1. Education and Training Solutions Reorganization

Within the context of Humber’s strategic priority of maximizing the impact of partnerships, and in alignment with our goal of enhancing Humber’s Corporate Training initiatives, the college has undertaken an operational and financial review of Education and Training Solutions (ETS), and its department’s business units, along with our ad hoc corporate training initiatives.

As a result of the review, Humber has realigned and reorganized the roles and responsibilities of its ETS division. The changes are as follows:

  • The ETS and its director, Karen Tavener, will now report directly to Alister Mathieson
  • Humber’s new Corporate Training business development initiative will be incorporated into ETS. In this approach, ETS will partner with Humber academic schools and departments from a content development and delivery perspective. Schools and departments have already been involved in the design of a corporate training framework and business plan
  • Youth initiatives including camps and other activities related to providing opportunities for potential future students to learn more about Humber will move to the Division of Student and Community Engagement, under the direction of Jason Hunter, Vice-President, Student & Community Engagement. These programs will be closely aligned with Strategic Enrolment Management objectives in support of the college’s access mandate.

These changes and decisions are part of Humber’s ongoing delivery on components of our strategic and business plans and our ongoing efforts of continuous process improvement. Our new direction will enable the academic division to continue to provide effective and relevant corporate training in a more co-ordinated manner while allowing the college to add significant value to its existing partners and open doors for new ones.

2. Sailing Centre Closure

Another decision resulting from the ETS operational and financial review is that after 25 years Humber will close the Sailing and Power Boating Centre, effective October 8, 2015.

This difficult decision is due to diminishing returns as a result of declining enrolment in summer and winter classes along with increasing costs to run programs and maintain equipment.

Humber will be notifying students and the sailing club members of its decision, and will seek to sell boats owned by the institution over the next few weeks.

We would like to thank our club patrons, local community and staff and faculty for their many contributions to the sailing program.

Please contact Laurie or Alister if you have any questions.
