Humber College Students Raise Funds and Awareness for Local Youth Shelter

August 8, 2013

Humber College students are partnering with Youth Without Shelter (YWS), a youth shelter located in north Etobicoke, to make a lasting difference in the lives of youth this summer.

YWS is the only youth shelter in Etobicoke that provides emergency residence and referral services to homeless youth ages 16-24. In addition to their many programs for youth at YWS, the first priority when a youth enters the shelter is to improve their physical health through a healthy diet. YWS provides three meals a day for an average of 50 homeless youth. Their greatest need in the kitchen is milk.

The goal of this student group is to raise enough money to supply the YWS kitchen with milk for two weeks this summer. To help raise these funds and to raise awareness for the organization they hosted a bale sale event at the Humber Lakeshore Campus on Wednesday July 31, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event was well attended by staff and students and was an overall success. The fundraising goals for the bake sale exceeded expectations and a total of $265 was raised for the cause.

A big thank you to all our volunteers, to those who donated baked goods and to Nashel's Event Planning Agency, who donated the thank you gifts. Also, thank you to those from the faculty and staff who supported this project.
