Humber Launches Truth and Reconciliation Training for Employees

Today marks the launch of Humber’s first Truth and Reconciliation cultural awareness training. The training, entitled 4 Seasons of Reconciliation, takes place via Blackboard and promotes a renewed relationship between Indigenous Peoples and Canadians through transformative learning about truth and reconciliation.

In the first phase of the launch, training will be offered to the following Departments and Faculties including ARI, CHRED, CTL, EDI Taskforce, HR, FHSW, FMCA, FSCS, PPDR, and SSE. More information will be sent directly to these individuals. For other Departments and Faculties, additional training dates are planned for later in the Fall and Winter semesters. Information will be provided once the schedule is finalized.

“We are proud to launch this critical training for the Humber community to provide Humber employees and staff additional information about Indigenous culture and history,” says Jason Seright, Dean, Indigenous Education and Engagement.

4 Seasons of Reconciliation is a 3-hour, 10-module online course that is designed directly in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action. It was designed in response to Call to Action #62, which calls upon federal, provincial and territorial governments and institutions to develop and implement curriculum and learning resources “on residential schools, Treaties, and Aboriginal peoples’ historical and contemporary contributions to Canada” (TRC, 2015).

The course is user-friendly and designed to provide context to those less familiar with the themes and historical context embedded in reconciliation. Each short module can be completed at the learner’s pace and provides a mix of learning tools such as PowerPoint, videos, films and quizzes. Learners will get to participate in two facilitated breakout sessions to support inquiry and reflection. A certificate of completion and a bonus video library for on-going learning is provided at the end of the course.

This training, endorsed by the Executive Team, supports Humber’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan under the Accessible Education pillar by expanding and enhancing Indigenous programming and research.

Information will continue to be posted on the Indigenous Education and Engagement website.
