New Humber Arboretum and Centre for Urban Ecology Policy

I’m pleased to announce the Humber Arboretum and Centre for Urban Ecology Policy (hereafter referred to as “the Policy”), which specifies the terms and conditions by which the Humber Arboretum’s lands, services and facilities may be used. The Policy has been approved by the Humber Arboretum’s Management Committee (which includes senior representatives from the Humber Arboretum’s three founding partners- Humber College, TRCA, and City of Toronto), as well as by Humber College Executive.

The Humber Arboretum and Centre for Urban Ecology includes 250 acres of land comprising woody and herbaceous plant collections, wildlife habitat, and natural areas. It also includes The Centre for Urban Ecology, a sustainable building located within the Humber Arboretum, built to serve the Humber Arboretum’s purpose. As outlined in the Humber Arboretum’s Tripartite Agreement, the Humber Arboretum’s purpose is:

  1. To establish and maintain a comprehensive, aesthetically pleasing collection of woody and herbaceous plants;
  2. To demonstrate correct arboricultural and horticultural techniques through responsible development and maintenance practices;
  3. To protect natural areas through appropriate conservation and restoration practices;
  4. To facilitate a range of educational and research opportunities in arboriculture and horticulture and environmental studies;
  5. To establish and promote the Humber Arboretum as a resource that is an integral part of the Greater Toronto community and an attraction for national and international visitors;
  6. To establish, maintain, and encourage Wildlife habitat; and
  7. To create and maintain a Centre for Urban Ecology that will serve as a gathering point, with functional laboratory and classroom facilities.

The Humber Arboretum’s lands, services and facilities are a resource for the general public as well as for Humber College and University of Guelph-Humber community members. The Policy specifies the terms and conditions by which the Humber Arboretum’s lands, services and facilities may be used.
