President's Lecture Series: Adrienne Keene

March 18, 2014

What is cultural appropriation? Who has the right to represent Native cultures?  How do Hollywood, the fashion industry, and sports mascots contribute to the marginalization of Native peoples? Adrienne Keene, the creator of Native Appropriations (nativeappropriations.com) and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, will discuss the ways pop culture represents Native peoples and how these images affect contemporary Indigenous communities. The ways Native communities and allies are pushing back against misrepresentations through online platforms and social media will also be discussed—including recent case studies involving Urban Outfitters, Paul Frank, and The Lone Ranger.

Adrienne Keene, Harvard Graduate School of Education Ed.D. candidate
