Michael Karapita, Professor, Journalism, Faculty of Media & Creative Arts
The Faculty of Media & Creative Arts asks you to join us in congratulating Michael Karapita on his upcoming retirement, following almost 20 years of service at Humber.
Mike, as he is affectionately known, has spent over 25 years as a professional journalist prior to joining Humber as a professor, and eventually, the program coordinator for the journalism program in 2004. He has worked for the likes of Canadian Press, CTV, and most prominently, CBC. He has written for national news, produced for local, national, and international news, and is even credited with developing several shows for both television and radio. He was nominated for a Gemini award, was named Media Studies Professor of the Year at Guelph-Humber in 2009, and was named one of the top 15 notable arts professors in Toronto by The Art Project in 2019.
Over the years, Mike has made many valuable contributions to the Faculty of Media & Creative Arts and the broader Humber community. He is the recipient of the 2016 Distinguished Faculty Award, helped develop the Accessible Design in Broadcast Media course, assisted with the production of the Inclusive Language in Broadcast Media: A Canadian Style Guide, mentored many years of new faculty hires at Humber, and welcomed CICE students into his classroom.
Mike’s last day at Humber will be December 31, 2023. Please join me in wishing Mike the very best of luck in this next chapter of life.
