Team Humber Wins Top Honours at 2015 Holland Marsh Soupfest

October 6, 2015

Team Humber warmed the guests of the 2015 Holland Marsh Soupfest and satisfied their palates, winning Best Soup in both the People’s Choice and Culinary Institution categories. A mixed team of first and second year Culinary Management students and faculty took part in the event this past weekend, with their crowd-pleasing Chipotle Roasted Butternut Squash Soup, with Smoked Ontario Pulled Pork, Quick-Pickled Apple and Goat Cheese Chantilly.

“We were thrilled to hear that our soup won in both categories,” says Culinary Management faculty member Simon Stenekes. “The students worked very hard preparing and executing a soup that we hoped would stand out from the crowd of 30 plus entrants,” he adds. “Once we had prepared and tasted all of the components, we felt we had a solid entry but certainly didn’t expect the overwhelming positive feedback we received.”

This is just another example of students gaining hands-on experience in the culinary world and participating in a community event. The event hosted close to 2000 guests and focused on local farming and vegetables grown in the Holland Marsh.

“All of our programs include experiential learning to ensure our students receive the skills they need to successfully start their careers,” says Susan Somerville, Dean, School of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism. “I’m so proud of our talented students and faculty who continue to shine and represent our School so well,” she adds.
