Volunteer Opportunity: FIRST Robotics Competition 2024

Community Outreach & Workforce Development (COWD) and the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology (FAST) are hosting the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) (District Event) at Humber College from March 18 to 20. This event will feature the best high school robotics teams in Ontario as they compete for four spots at the World Championship.

We are thrilled to announce an opportunity for Humber staff, faculty, and students to volunteer at the competition. Volunteers play a crucial role in making FRC events a success, contributing to the development of the next generation of innovators and leaders. By volunteering, you'll inspire and support young minds in their journey to explore STEM fields, all while being part of an exciting and rewarding community dedicated to shaping the future of technology.

We are looking for both faculty and students as volunteers:

Faculty

We are specifically looking to recruit faculty members as judges for the event. We really want our judge pool to reflect the diversity of our students in every aspect. That means all genders, races, ages, occupations and interests are welcome. No experience needed. You will receive all the training needed for the role. Judges play a crucial role in recognizing outstanding achievements in robot design, programming, and teamwork. We will give you all the training you need to feel comfortable in the role.

Time commitment:

  • Judges training dinner on March 18 (typically 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.)
  • Event competition judging days - two full days, March 19 and 20 (typically 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

Students

We are also looking for students for volunteer roles such as robot inspectors, match queuers, field resetters, and more.

About the FIRST Robotics Competition

The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is an exhilarating global robotics competition for high school students. Each year, teams of students, guided by mentors, design, build, and program robots to compete in a unique game or challenge announced at the beginning of the season. The competition encourages teamwork, innovation, and problem-solving skills as participants collaborate to complete tasks and score points within a specified time frame. FRC combines the excitement of sports with the rigor of science and technology, fostering a spirit of friendly competition and promoting STEM education.
