War is becoming increasingly dangerous for journalists. While getting killed has long been an occupational hazard, the threat of kidnap and execution are newer phenomena increasing the risks still further. Exposure to stressors of these sorts leave journalists vulnerable to the development of psychological difficulties such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and substance abuse. Drawing on remarkable photographs taken in conflict zones – from the Balkan Civil Wars in the late 20th century to more recent conflicts in Syria and Kenya – Dr. Feinstein will help us to understand the degree to which front line journalists are emotionally affected by their work.
