Some schools now photograph students every second. Artificial intelligence (AI) programs judge whether they are paying attention, and rank them accordingly. AI hiring programs can evaluate almost any aspect of our lives – social media use, tone of voice, facial expressions and “microexpressions” undetectable by the human eye – to decide whether we should be hired. And police robots may soon patrol the streets, looking for suspect activity. What ethical issues are raised by these practices, and how should law regulate them? In this lecture, Professor Pasquale will address these questions, opening a dialogue on the proper role of AI in ranking and rating humans.
