Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) is currently available to mentally capable Canadian adults with serious and incurable illnesses, diseases, and disabilities, who meet very specific eligibility criteria. Individuals who would request MAID solely on the basis of mental illness, however, are currently excluded by the law, and this exclusion is set to be lifted in March, 2024. Debates on this issue have been highly polarized and at times vitriolic, both in the public sphere and in medical, legal, and bioethics communities. In this talk, Dr. Justine Dembo will explore the many sides of this debate in a way that is intended to encourage critical thinking about MAID and mental illness.
