“I can’t breathe!” “Hands up, don’t shoot!”

Tragedies across the United States have underscored tensions between police and marginalized communities, and Canada isn’t immune to this problem. The Government of Ontario recently released a regulation on street checks, or carding, that is designed to improve interactions between police and these communities across the province.

In this lecture, Jamil Jivani will examine this and other ideas emerging from police and community groups hoping to bring about positive change. Will any of these responses help us to create a safer, more equitable society? What is it going to take to actually solve this problem?
