President's Lecture Series: J.B. MacKinnon

The Day the World Stops Shopping: What Deconsumer Culture Might Look Like

Consumerism is now the greatest driver of our environmental crises, including climate change: the planet needs us to stop shopping. Yet every time we slow our consumption, the result is disaster: the economy needs us to keep shopping. Is there any way past this dilemma? Can we consume less without causing the collapse of civilization? In this lecture, J.B. MacKinnon will argue that the answer to these questions is yes—and that there is a role for all of us in a “deconsumer society” that transforms our economy, our ecology, our products, and even ourselves.
