Youth Jazz in the City, which creates opportunities for young performers to study with some of the finest jazz musicians in Canada, features Michael Gracie (trumpet), Liam Masil-Mitro (alto sax), Andrew Marzotto (guitar), Holt Stuart-Hitchcox (bass), and Louis Baranyi-Irvine (drums).
Joining the Humber group will be Joseph Manzoli (guitar), Caili O۪Doherty (piano), Isaac Haselkorn (drums) and Shin Sakaino (acoustic bass), a jazz quartet from the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, Boston.
Shohei Yamaki and fulare_pad from the Sapporo Jazz Festival, Japan, will round things out. Yamaki, who performs solo on acoustic guitar, prides himself on being able to create a dazzling array of sounds. fulare_pad consists of Daisuke Maeda on ukulele and Hideyuki Shimizu on guitar. With three albums under their belt, the two are creating a niche for themselves as featured performers in cafes and music theatres throughout Japan.
According to Cathy Mitro, Community Music School, The groups all get together at Humber the day before the performance for an informal workshop and jam session. It's a fantastic opportunity for some very talented young Canadians to work with their counterparts from around the world.
