Humber Galleries Presents Refraction

May 11, 2016

Location: Lakeshore Campus, L 1002

From May 10-June 8th, 2016 L Space Gallery at Humber College Lakeshore Campus presents Refraction, an exhibition that brings together notable works from Humber Galleries and Collection in dialogue with the various faculties, pedagogies and research areas represented by the college.

Works by 11 artists are paired with responses of seven faculty members to interpret, question and evaluate the selected works. The goal of the exhibition is to demonstrate the processes of collaborative meaning-making that result from an encounter between an artwork, a text and a viewer. This unique exhibit actively solicits responses from viewers, collectively illustrating the many ways that art can be accessed and interpreted.

Displayed works at the Refraction exhibit include print, paintings, photography, mixed media, and sculptures. Among the featured artists is Nicholas Galanin, a multi-disciplinary artist and musician of Tlingit/Aleut and non-Native ancestry and Harley Valentine, a contemporary Canadian artist based in Toronto.

Collections Access Planner Britt Gallpen is pleased to facilitate an exhibition that invites the audience to appraise and interpret art, allowing for the curation of a diversity of perspectives. “We look forward to welcoming our publics, including staff, students and the broader Lakeshore community, to take part in the dynamic conversation that has taken root around works from our permanent collection,” says Gallpen. “The variety of responses reflected here emphasize our collection’s capacity to spur imaginative and critical thought and we are excited for the ways projects like this continue to activate these works.”
