NAOSH Week Quiz #1 – Workplace Injuries

WORKPLACE INJURIES AT HUMBER

Humber is committed to providing a safe work environment for all staff and endeavours to reduce workplace risks that may lead to accidents and personal injury. If a work-related incident or injury does occur, it is important to know how to respond:

GET HELP

If someone is injured, the first priority is to ensure that the person receives first aid or medical attention:

For Emergencies:

  • Call 911 for ambulance, fire or police services; AND
  • Contact Public Safety. If you call 911 from a Humber phone, Public Safety will be connected to the call automatically. Otherwise, contact Public Safety at 416.675.6622 x4000. Security can assist in directing first responders to specific campus locations, providing first aid, securing the site and controlling local activities.

For Non-Emergencies - several options are available:

  • Go to one of Humber’s Health Centres. Employees who have been hurt at work can see a nurse for first aid treatment and assessment.
    • North Campus: LRC 2nd Floor
    • Lakeshore Campus: WEL 2nd Floor
  • Contact Public Safety at 416.675.6622 x 8500. All security officers are trained in first aid.
  • If care is sought from an outside provider such as a local urgent care clinic or family doctor, inform the doctor that the injury happened at work.

REPORT THE INCIDENT

  • Report the incident to your supervisor as soon as possible.
  • The supervisor is to submit the Health & Safety Incident Report Form  to Health & Safety Services within 24hrs. Email the form to healthandsafety@humber.ca.
  • Health and Safety Services will follow up to ensure that the incident is investigated and preventive measures are in place.
  • Health and Safety Services will submit a claim to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and coordinate a return to work plan, if needed.
  • During the recovery period, be sure to keep in touch with your supervisor, Health and Safety Services and, if necessary, the WSIB.

Now you know what to do if some gets hurt, go back to the top and try the quiz for a chance to win a prize. Don’t forget to check out the daily quiz every day this week for more chances to win. Correct answers will be entered in a draw. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, May 14. Good luck!
