Faculty Orientation Week

Welcome to all Full-Time and Part-Time Humber Faculty! We are excited to welcome you and hope you can join us for Orientation week. Please visit our website for all the Orientation week activities we have lined up for you Monday, August 24 to Friday, August 27.

Monday, August 24: Welcome

Welcome to all new full-time and part-time faculty!

On Monday, August 24, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., we invite you to an online welcome session for all new faculty. During the session, you will meet members of Humber’s executive leadership team, learn about our institutional priorities and student-centered focus, and find out about the training and resources available to you as a faculty member.

Tuesday, August 25 and Wednesday, August 26: New Part-Time Faculty Orientation: Teaching and Learning at Humber College

This session will introduce you to Teaching and Learning at Humber College.  We look forward to including you in our conversations about facilitating learning in this newly online world.  As a polytechnic institute, our goal is to build career-ready citizens. We do this by developing deep levels of subject matter expertise through an active learning environment, with plenty of opportunities to apply new knowledge.  This session will share tips, tools and templates to help you bring these goals to life.  All are warmly welcome.

  1. Who are we, and who are you? Introductions
  2. Where does online learning take place? Understanding the “Community of Inquiry”
  3. Who are our learners? Understanding learner variability
  4. Four A’s of lesson planning
  5. Launching your online course: What/when is “Day One?”
  6. What do learners need to be engaged?
  7. Being present in your online course

  9. Invitation to the Part Time Faculty Series: Monthly meetings forthcoming (survey on topics of interest)

Thursday, August 27 and Friday, August 28: ED-Venture Days

ED-Venture Days is a two-day online conference for all Humber faculty. It will take place on August 27 and 28.

Conference offerings include interactive sessions, panel discussions, and featured keynote speaker, Dr. Sarah Eaton. This conference aims to connect Humber colleagues with one another and to encourage interdisciplinary conversations focused on teaching and learning. You are welcome to attend as many of the sessions as you wish. Registration ahead of time is encouraged but not required. For each session you attend, your name will be entered into a draw to win one of five 1-year subscriptions to Padlet or Mentimeter (terrific online teaching tools — you choose which!).
