Nuit Blanche Toronto 2023: Etobicoke Hub - Call for Independent Projects

Nuit Blanche, Toronto’s all-night contemporary art event, will take place on September 23, 2023, in neighbourhoods across the city, including major exhibition areas in Etobicoke, downtown and Scarborough. This year, the City of Toronto seeks to uncover and highlight artists whose ground-breaking practices challenge the status quo through media, form or content that transforms public spaces and inspires the public to see and experience Toronto in new and meaningful ways.

Humber Galleries is excited to announce that, Lakeshore Campus will return as a major exhibition hub for Nuit Blanche Toronto 2023 and is now accepting Independent Project applications. These are self-produced projects that can be installed in traditional and non-traditional spaces, such as parks, window vitrines, courtyards, storefronts, office towers, parking lots, and laneways. Applicants from any artistic discipline are eligible, but proposals ought to have a strong visual component and be rooted in contemporary art practices. Proposals should also address and integrate Nuit Blanche Toronto’s 2023 curatorial theme Breaking Ground in their project and must be located on Lakeshore Campus.

The 2023 curatorial theme Breaking Ground speaks to ideas centred around the natural world as well as being on the vanguard of change and innovation. Defined as the preparation for building or planting, Breaking Ground invites artists to explore a multiplicity of themes, including but not limited to the implications of climate change, construction and development of the city’s urban landscape, the impacts on communities and our collective responsibilities around land and stewardship.

The Independent Project program is open to all Humber College students, faculty, alumni, and staff, as well as Toronto-based professional artists, collectives, and arts organizations. All applications will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of the Nuit Blanche Etobicoke Curator, City of Toronto staff, and Humber College staff.

Applications must be submitted by Monday, March 27, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. EST via email to melissa.poliah@humber.ca.
