Last Wednesday, the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences and the School of Nursing officially launched our new Living Classroom at Schlegel Villages’ Village of Humber Heights — an innovative learning environment that brings education and real-world practice together in one inspiring space.
Colleagues from across Humber and Schlegel Villages joined us to celebrate the opening, explore the classroom and lab, tour Schlegel’s Main Street concept, and learn more about this unique model of learning and care. The event featured remarks from Jamie Schlegel, president and CEO, Schlegel Villages; Carolyn Triemstra, education engagement lead, SchlegelUW Research Institute for Aging; Dr. Gina Antonacci, senior vice-president Academic; and Dr. Sandra Filice, dean, School of Nursing.
The new Living Classroom features a 46-seat classroom, a six-bed simulation lab, a dedicated simulation suite, and an apartment style learning area that reflects the environments students will encounter in practice.
The Living Classroom will welcome its first cohort of Practical Nursing and Personal Support Worker students on Monday, January 26, and we are thrilled to begin this new venture in innovative teaching and learning.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Humber’s Facilities and ITS teams for their tremendous work in preparing the space for this milestone. We are equally grateful to the dedicated FHLS support staff, academic leaders, and operations teams whose collaboration and care brought this vision to life. Thank you to everyone who played a part in making the Living Classroom a reality.
We look forward to welcoming our first students next week!
