Two years ago, the Arab Spring sent shock waves around the world, as societies in the Middle East and North Africa threw off the shackles of authoritarian regimes. For a brief moment, anything seemed possible. Today, however, setbacks on the economic and political fronts seem to threaten some of the fragile democratic gains that have been made. Still, there is reason for hope. In this talk, Sonia Verma will examine how these post-revolutionary societies have shifted in significant and profound ways. The grassroots movements of the Arab Spring will endure, as the young people that led these revolutions come of age. This generational shift is crucial to understanding the future of a region whose story is still unfolding.
