Community Starts at BSSE!

The Black Student Support and Engagement (BSSE) centre is an equity hub within the division of Inclusion, Belonging and Student Experience that focuses on supporting students that identify as Black Canadian, Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Latin X and Black Indigenous at Humber Polytechnic and the University of Guelph-Humber.

The goal of BSSE is to create a holistic environment where students have access to community, resources and support to help them maximize their post-secondary experience. It is important to us that you succeed during your time with us and beyond. To ensure this, BSSE offers supportive programming that provides opportunities for students to connect, engage, build community, learn and grow.

The BSSE framework is based on four pillars of support.

Pillars of Support

Rooted in Community

We cultivate spaces of connection, joy, and affirmation where Black students feel seen, valued, and supported. Through events, peer networks, and intentional outreach, we foster a strong sense of belonging and pride in identity.

Empowered by Culture

Our programming celebrates the richness and diversity of the Black experience. From dialogue circles to artistic expression and cultural celebrations, we centre Black voices and lived experience in everything we do.

Leading with Purpose

We nurture leadership in all forms whether through advocacy, mentorship, or campus involvement. Our programs equip Black students with the tools, confidence and opportunities to lead authentically and boldly in any space they enter.

Guided with Care

We connect Black students with the resources, services and supports they need to thrive academically, socially and emotionally. With a trauma-informed and culturally responsive lens we ensure students have pathways to wellness, safety and success.
