If you use the central answer sheet scanning service offered by Information Technology Services, be advised that the form students use to mark their responses has changed.

Going forward, legacy SCANTRON forms will no longer be accepted. Effective immediately, instructors are asked to start using a new, non-proprietary answer sheet.

Using the new form is quick and easy. Simply visit humber.ca/staff/its, click the Answer Sheet Scanning link, and print (double sided) as many Answer Sheets as needed.

Note that the new answer sheet solution is as easy to use and offers the same features as the legacy form. No special training is needed to start using the new answer sheet. But unlike the legacy form, the new answer sheet works on modern scanners. And switching to a non-proprietary solution saves Humber the expense of buying printed forms.

Instructors are asked to use the new answer sheet effective immediately. Assessments already completed on legacy SCANTRON forms will be accepted until the end of the week.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me at x5290. You can also reach me at Ryan.Burton@humber.ca at any time.

Humber is becoming a greener campus and everyone is participating! Humber Sustainability Highlights features what departments around the college are doing to integrate sustainable practices. This month’s focus is the Department of Applied Research and Innovation which recently introduced a paper reduction initiative by transferring the following to digital format:

  • Internal funding applications
  • Research Ethics Board Committee
  • 2014-2015 Annual Report
  • New Venture Seed Fund applications

Lowering paper usage resulted in significant environmental savings, higher efficiency measures and increased productivity throughout the department. With nearly 171, 500 pages of paper being used each year- 160, 000 pages  for the Annual Report alone, Ethics and Internal Programs manager, Krista Holmes knew it was time to make a change.

“By moving all of our systems online, the department has made managing our departmental projects more convenient and efficient. Information and archived projects are now easily accessible on our website.  As a department that supports and values sustainability, we are excited about this initiative and the positive impacts it will have on our environmental footprint,” said Holmes.

Why should we care about reducing our paper and printing waste?

  • Pulp and paper is the third largest industrial polluter to air, water and land in both Canada and the United States, and releases well over 100 million kg of toxic pollution each year.
  • Making a tonne of paper uses as much energy as making a tonne of steel.
  • In Canada, the paper industry is one of the biggest users of water.
  • Reduces consumption of office supplies — not just paper but also toner and other copy-related products.

On Wed Dec 9th, the Humber College Retirees' Association hosted its annual Christmas Luncheon in the Humber Room.

A great time was had by the many retired staff who returned to the College to enjoy one another's company and a great Christmas luncheon. Part of our event is dedicated to the raising of money for a Humber College Retirees' bursary.

This year we raised $890 to add to our bursary fund. This money was raised by selling raffle tickets for the many gifts that were donated by the different schools and offices, external companies, and retired members of Humber College.

A great big thank you for your donations on behalf of the retirees' association and the students who will benefit from the bursary.

Pictures from the event will be posted shortly at retirees.humber.ca under "Social Events".

On Friday, December 4, 23 teams comprised of students and staff took part in the 2015 Spin-a-thon for United Way of Toronto & York Region, raising over $15,000 for local communities in need.

Organized by 2nd-year students in the Fitness & Health Promotion program, this is the sixth year in a row that the event has taken place at Humber, but the first year with students running the show.

“It was a great experience for our students and I’m thrilled with the outcome,” says Fitness & Health Promotion instructor, Debra Basch. “They came a long way from the start of the semester, not knowing how to put an event together, to now having a very successful one behind them. I’m very proud of what they accomplished,” she adds.

There was an increase in student participation this year with five teams in total, a new record for the event. The teams were very creative with their themes as well, from ‘We Are LED-ing The Way’, to ‘Spinners of Oz’.
