Goal 1:

Recruit and support an increasingly diverse group of students from countries around the globe

Highlights

2017 Local Representative Training Workshop

In August 2017, the International Centre’s recruitment team hosted a group of 50 local Humber representatives for a one-day workshop at the Lakeshore Campus. The purpose of the workshop was to familiarize representatives with Humber’s processes and procedures from application through to student acceptance and beyond. Participants in the workshop also had the opportunity to critically review sample student applications in order to gain better insight into the application evaluation process. Event facilitators included members of the international recruitment team, the international admissions team, and IT systems staff from both the International Centre and the Registrar’s Office. The format of the workshop was based on similar Humber-hosted workshops in Mexico, Brazil and Colombia.

HumberBrasil Facebook Page

In April 2017, the HumberBrasil page was launched on Facebook in order to engage with the growing Brazilian population both at Humber and those considering Humber as their study destination. The page currently has a growing network of over 1,900, and Brazilian students at Humber are connecting with each other through this online community to organize social and sporting events and to ask questions to the community. HumberBrasil’s content includes unique interview content (PapoHumber), links to events happening at Humber and in the Toronto area, responses to student queries, and more.

Highlights of the Year

Algonquin Thanksgiving Trip

During the Thanksgiving weekend, Humber led a group of 46 adventurous International students to beautiful Algonquin Park. Students experienced the fall colours, canoe trips and hiking trails, and learned how to cook outside, build fires and about the wildlife that call Algonquin Park home. But most of all, they created memories that truly enhance their experience here at Humber!

International Education Week & Global Lens Photography Exhibit

From November 14-18, 2016, the International Centre hosted International Education Week (IEW) on both North and Lakeshore campuses. Through interactive activities, entertainment, language cafes, and a globally-themed art exhibit, IEW gives the Humber community the opportunity to learn about various countries and their unique culture.

The Global Lens Photography Exhibit (GLE) is a visual demonstration of students learning and faculty/staff experiences through study and work opportunities. In 2016 the G.L.E. was transformed into an online gallery where visitors can view the world through diverse lenses.

Humber Goes Global provides an opportunity to participants to learn about various countries and their unique characteristics including food, traditional clothing and language. This past year, Mauritius, Brazil, Taiwan and Poland were featured at booths at both Humber campuses. Students who lived in, travelled to, or studied these countries shared their personal stories and cultural insights with the Humber community.

Language Cafés in Mandarin (China) and Portuguese (Brazil) were offered during IEW at both campuses. Participants had the opportunity to learn a few words in a different language and share their cultural interests.

Students who have worked or studied abroad (including international students who are studying in Canada) shared their experience, interacted with visitors, and shared stories from their travels abroad.
