Humber College’s School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, in partnership with the International Festival of Authors (IFOA), will be presenting “Mapping Nations, Locating Citizens”, an interdisciplinary conference on nationalism and identity. The International Festival of Authors (IFOA), one of the most celebrated literary festivals in the world, is located at the Harbourfront Centre, one of downtown Toronto’s major cultural and artistic venues. The conference aims to facilitate cross-disciplinary discussion among scholars and researchers who study the topics of nationalism and identity. Some emergent themes to be explored include, but are not limited to:

  • performing citizenship
  • emerging nationhood
  • subaltern studies
  • statelessness
  • diaspora studies
  • racism and nationalism
  • post-nationalism
  • memory and nation-building
  • religo-ethno-nationalism
  • cosmopolitanism
  • exploding mythologies
  • consumerism
  • sexuality and citizenship
  • disability/identity

The Mental Health First Aid program provides information about common mental health problems and specific disorders. The program will also cover simple and explicit actions we can take to identify the signs and symptoms of distress and provide meaningful support. Whether you are faculty, support staff or an administrator you will learn useful and relevant information to assist you to cope with mental health concerns in your professional and personal life.

In this two-day certificate program, you will learn how to:

Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health problems

  • Improve your understanding of mental illness
  • Minimize the fear and hesitation to become involved when you think someone is experiencing a mental health problem
  • Learn simple and effective intervention strategies.

Strategic Plan Town Halls – Mark your calendars!
 
Humber Town Hall meetings are an opportunity for the Humber community to meet regularly to discuss issues of relevance to postsecondary education and to engage in dialogue on topics related to the 2013-2018 Humber Strategic Plan. The sessions are hosted by President Whitaker and we encourage all faculty and staff to join the conversation.
 
We want to make sure that Town Hall discussion topics are relevant for you. If you have not already done so, please take a moment to share your thoughts and ideas about the Town Hall series in a short, anonymous online survey.
 
If you can’t join us in person, plan to participate online. All Town Halls are live streamed by Humber’s Media Services Team. Please visit humber.ca/wearehumber and follow the links to watch the session and submit questions online during the Q&A.
