Disability Services, in partnership with the Tetra Society of North America, is offering an interactive information session on the services available to students and staff through Tetra’s “Youth in Transition” project.

The Tetra Society of North America recruits skilled student-volunteers to create customized assistive devices for persons with disabilities. The partnership between Tetra’s “Youth in Transition” project and Humber is in its 2nd year. Through this partnership, Humber engineering students and technicians work one-on-one with students and staff with disabilities to invent ‘gizmos’ that overcome barriers. Tetra currently works with a total of 8 colleges and universities and provides valuable learning opportunities for students while supporting more inclusive design. In collaboration with students, Tetra may be able to create “gizmos” for use in residence, in the classroom, on placement/co-op etc.

As an example of what’s possible, previous Tetra projects include:

  • Desk adaptations: to better fit a wheelchair
  • Book holders: to keep study materials open
  • Easels: to enable painting, drawing and drafting
  • Wheelchair trays: for organizing notebooks, books and laptop
  • Wheelchair cell phone mounts
  • Remote-controlled door opener

Anyone at Humber who works with students or works to create space on campus for student use will find this session helpful.

Sustainability is part of Humber College’s new strategic plan. The college has just been recognized as a silver star by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education STARS program. The Business School is the largest school at Humber with 7,000 students in diploma, degree and post-graduate programs.

The discourse on sustainability is often presented from a polarized either-or perspective – we can have environmental and social sustainability or economic sustainability but not all three (for example with oil sands, pipelines, and tankers). The Conference will bring together leaders in bridging the perceived gap between the three pillars of sustainability. Our speakers will educate, enlighten, stimulate and encourage students, faculty and staff throughout the college by sharing their experiences of individuals and/or companies who succeed economically while embracing sustainability holistically. Our vision is that this is the beginning of an annual conversation on sustainability in business, one which will expand discussion in our classrooms well beyond the day of conference, informing course content, programming and the practice of future business professionals.

We are pleased to present 4 guest speakers who will address the topic of Sustainability from social, environmental and economic perspectives. Following the speaker presentations there will be a panel discussion, question and answer dialogue and light lunch.
We encourage you to take advantage of this unique learning opportunity and invite you and your students to attend Sustainability How? Social, Environmental, Economic. The conference is generously being sponsored by The Business School and, as such, there is no registration fee.

Building assessments into Blackboard can become rather time consuming, but there is a workaround! Beginning this fall, Humber is proud to provide their faculty with a campus-wide license of Repondus. Fully compatible with Blackboard, Respondus is a premiere exam authoring tool that allows faculty to preview questions before publishing them to the LMS, publish assessments directly to Blackboard, create single exams or exam pools, as well as print exams and save files to MS Word.
