Humber Named One of Canada’s Greenest Employers

We are excited to announce that Humber College was named one of Canada's Greenest Employers for the eighth year in a row! The award recognizes employers that lead the nation in making environmental values part of their organizational culture.

"Sustainability is one of our core values and an essential part of Humber's identity," says Lindsay Walker, associate director, Sustainability. "It’s ingrained in our behaviour, culture, and practices. Our commitment to sustainability also extends to the way we educate our students. We want to prepare them for the future and help them understand their power to make a positive impact on the world, no matter which field they enter.”

Some of Humber’s sustainability highlights include:

SWITCH Decarbonization Project

SWITCH is a bold infrastructure project that directly addresses the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions at the North Campus: the heating and cooling system. SWITCH will reduce fossil fuels by 70 per cent at the North campus.

The Humber Cultural Hub

The Humber Cultural Hub project will be one of the most sustainable developments in the country. It is designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification, Toronto Green Standards, and Net Zero carbon targets.

Reusable Container Programs

In the effort to reduce single-use packaging waste that ends up in the landfills, Humber implemented two programs: O2GO at North Campus and Friendlier at Lakeshore.

Humber is a Bee Campus

Humber became a designated Bee Campus in the Fall of 2021. To educate the public about bees, Humber installed hives at our North and Lakeshore campuses as well as in the Arboretum. All hives are to be reared using organic and ethical practices. We are excited to partner with Bee City Canada to ensure we are advocating for native species in the 250 acres of natural space surrounding Humber’s campuses.

2019-2024 Sustainability Plan

The 2019–2024 Sustainability Plan outlines a bold approach to reimagine our future to shape healthy, inclusive and sustainable communities. The plan outlines over 100 actions the college community is committed to achieving by 2024, taking on the shared responsibility to own and reflect our values in our actions.
