Learning strategy sessions are an additional service that Accessible Learning Services can facilitate for learners with disabilities. Learners are assessed by an accessibility consultant to determine if they have barriers to learning and may benefit from working with a learning strategist. The services are external to Humber. In some cases, learners can access a bursary to cover the cost.
A learning strategist teaches students how to learn, rather than teaching them specific curriculum content. The strategist recommends specific strategies based on the impact of the disability to assist learners in cultivating the following skills:
- Improving assignment and test performance
- Motivation
- Problem-solving
- Time-management and organization
- Establishing and persisting toward goals
- Planning and starting assignments
- Beating procrastination and distraction
- Concentration and focus
- Note-taking
- Study skills and test/exam preparation
- Reading strategically to increase comprehension
- Researching, developing and organizing writing assignments
- Self-advocacy and reframing negative beliefs
