Active Attacker Drills and Training to Take Place September 22-27, 2025

At Humber Polytechnic and the University of Guelph-Humber, we strive to create the one of the safest campus environments in Canada. As part of our pledge to keep our community safe, Humber conducts active attacker drills each September, as well as ongoing training.

With the start of the summer semester, I would like to remind everyone that our active attacker training is available online.

The training link can be found about halfway down the page. The training is 30 minutes in length and there is a short knowledge check at the end of the training.

Ninety-minute in-person training is also available and allows for more two-way communication between the facilitator and participants. This training is recommended for large groups, areas that may be at higher risk, and for persons with disabilities, particularly because it allows us to address specific issues and needs of the individual.

Please note that the way we conduct our drills changed last year. Instead of having the community act out the “run and hide” portion of the Run, Hide, Defend response, we have moved to a more educational approach. During the drill time, which will be announced closer to September, we will test our mass notification systems by playing the actual active attacker emergency message. Once that test is complete, all staff and faculty will be instructed to join a Teams meeting where the York Region Police active attacker video will be played. More details about that will be forthcoming.

In the meantime, I encourage everyone to take the active attacker training either online or in-person. If you would like to have the in-person training provided, or if you have any questions, please contact us at emergency.management@humber.ca.

Thank you.
