Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform

October 12, 2016

The Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform (CCBR) is onsite at the North Campus in the “link” hallway from the Learning Resource Commons to the student concourse by the bookstore and Gourmet Express. Please note that the group’s signs and materials contain graphic images that some may deem to be upsetting or disturbing.

The CCBR is an anti-abortion advocacy group that is visiting Ontario College campuses to conduct outreach activities. The group is planning to continue these visits throughout the academic year.

While on campus, we expect that the group will remain in this location. We also expect that they will distribute literature and make attempts to engage individuals in personal dialogue. You are not required to respond to communications or take any materials being handed out.

Having the CCBR on campus does not mean that we endorse their views. Humber does not take a position on either side of the anti-abortion/pro-choice debate. The college has not invited the group to campus, nor are we involved in their activity.

We have sought legal counsel and learned that the group has the legal right to visit public areas of the campus. We have met with the group and arranged parameters for their time at Humber. Security is present and any issues or concerns will be evaluated and addressed.

Allowing CCBR to visit our campus is based on the premise that freedom of expression is important at postsecondary institutions. We are committed to being an institution that values diverse opinion, welcomes dialogue and encourages debate. The college supports the rights of individuals and groups to share their views, including those that may be uncomfortable or controversial, provided that such expression is done in a safe and respectful manner, is free from discrimination and harassment and does not promote hatred or obscenities.

Humber is committed to providing a safe and welcoming campus environment for students, employees and guests. We understand that some members of our community may find CCBR’s materials, messages and images upsetting.

Students seeking comfort and support may access counselling through scheduled and drop-in appointments at the Student Wellness & Accessibility Centre (2nd floor LRC) or by calling 416.675.5090

Confidential employee counselling is also available 24 hours per day, seven days per week from our Employee Assistance Program provider which may be accessed by calling 1-800-461-9722.

For anyone with concerns regarding the behaviour or conduct of any individuals or groups distributing information on campus, please email speakup@humber.ca or call 416-675-6622 ext. 77587.

Thank you.
