In this piece, karma is depicted as the intersecting lines of our lives as they interact with one another, forging a different path for every choice we make; or it's the dog chasing it's own tail, unaware that this fruitless pursuit is keeping it trapped in a cycle of indefinite distress. Also included in the middle of the painting is an abstract representation of Saturn, the ruling planet associated with karma in traditional Roman mythology. 2024 Emma Smith N01566631 Visual and Digital Arts Lakeshore Social Media, Faculty/Staff, Word of Mouth, Email 25-02-2024

The focal point of the artwork is a solitary girl, enveloped in the soft glow of ambient light, delicately applying makeup in front of a mirror nestled in the corner of the room. 2023 scott tran N01552477 Visual and Digital Art Lakeshore Social Media, Faculty/Staff 25-02-2024

The backdrop of a modern era, the wooden vessel stands as a silent witness, combined with the presence of an airport and planes soaring through the sky, echoing the relentless march of contemporary time. In this photograph I intended to use the warmth of the wooden vessel, the daylight of the beautiful sunset and the silhouette of the figures to evoke a timeless narrative of stories. Although the daylight ends, people continue to warm the foreground with a sense of anonymity from their darken silhouette.

My intention was not to narrate a singular story but rather to encapsulate a multitude of narratives. The focus was on evoking a distinct feeling, providing a fleeting glimpse into the lives of the individuals captured in the frame. The sunset serves as a powerful symbol of the passage of time, casting its warm glow over the timeless wooden ship and darken subjects.

Her smile, like a beacon of happiness, illuminates the frame, exuding a timeless elegance that transcends the monochrome palette.

Captured within this enchanting moment is not just the celebration of love and union, but also the intricate details that symbolize the bride's journey to this significant day. Noticeably, her adorned hands, meticulously embellished with delicate nail extensions and art, bear testament to the care and attention lavished upon her in preparation for this auspicious occasion. It's worth noting that these exquisite nail extensions and artistry were meticulously crafted by the photographer, underscoring the intimate connection between the artist and the subject, who happens to be the photographer's beloved niece.

Every aspect of this image speaks volumes – from the subtle curves of her bindi to the graceful sweep of her hair adorned with traditional ornaments. Against a backdrop of cultural significance and personal connection, the bride's smile becomes a narrative of hope, tradition, and the promise of a blissful future.

"Smiles of Tradition: Portrait of an Indian Bride" is not merely a photograph; it is a testament to the enduring beauty found in the union of tradition, love, and familial bonds. It encapsulates the essence of a cherished moment, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the timeless allure of a bride's smile.

"To whom do I owe the biggest apology?
No one's been crueller than I've been to me."

I had a similar reaction when I read this quote the first time. The realization was both overwhelming and unsettling, and all I could do was stare at nothing- contemplating my life so far, regretting and grieving my hurt soul. The emotion behind this man's eyes, and his state of apparent self-destruction because of poor coping mechanisms were relatable to me at the time and I wanted to capture it.

Through the manipulation of daylight and shadows I captured a fleeting, yet profound, moment from a stranger's life.

I saw this individual during my first trip, downtown Toronto to do photography, two weeks ago. Once I had framed the the composition I was happy with I waited patiently for a moment to capture.

This image serves as a reminder that photography surpasses the simple act of capturing a moment in time. It is an artistic endeavor that extends beyond mere documentation, representing emotion and feelings - reliving a moment captured through light.
