As a child in special ed, my class was generally not included in a lot of activities, like field trips and activity days. We were often left feeling very disappointed. Now, as an adult, I realize that we lost out on so much more than just the fun events.

In high school, I was in a class full of intelligent outside the box thinkers. There were artists, musicians and comedians. One thing we all had in common was that the education provided for us did not enable us to go to post-secondary school in a traditional way. Many of my school friends have ended up in minimum wage jobs or floating around not knowing what to do. I got into post secondary as a mature student. Now that I'm in college, I realize that I lack many of the basic abilities necessary to succeed on my own.

The special Education students hands were tied up as soon as you enter those classroom doors and our futures have been limited by the people who were supposed to help us succeed in life.

This photo is my portrayal of the special education experience, the cage, is limiting access to the required knowledge and, at the same time, is isolating the subject from her peers in the mainstream classrooms. The letters scattered on the ground represent dyslexia. The letters are difficult to see just as others can't see that she has dyslexia, so they don't fully understand why she isn't learning at the same pace as everyone else. This causes people to be frustrated and short-tempered with her, and she is often thought to be lazy. Kids with learning disables aren't lazy. We are stuck in small cages call the 'Special' Ed class.

I like to walk around and take pictures of simple, timeless scenes with interesting patterns or balanced shapes. I've been to the Garden of the Humber Arboretum a few times, usually taking photos of flowers or the greenery. But this day, I wanted to capture people enjoying the beauty of the garden. When I saw an old man walking, I knew it something surreal and one of kind moment. Watching him walk among the plants felt timeless. He seemed so peaceful, surrounded by nature's calmness. The scale of the scene amplifies the sense of solitude, emphasizing the quiet majesty of the moment.

I drew the faces of girls from all over the world, each paired with a flower native to the place she comes from. The faces and flowers are all different, therefore, each one contributes a unique beauty to the basket. This is how I see the world. Beauty takes many forms, and I believe that every individual, every culture, and every tradition plays a part in making our world as bright as it is. After all, a basket filled with various types of flowers is much more interesting than a basket dedicated only to one type of flower. 2023 Elizaveta Ampem N01617431 Bachelor of Industrial Design North Email 25-02-2024

A fashion editorial portrait. I've always been drawn to simple and bold colour palettes to highlight an outfit and model. The colour yellow is often associated with optimism, hope, and confidence, which plays off of the model's outfit perfectly. I also love experimenting with wide angle lenses for fashion portraits, and seeing how distortion can interplay with posing, texture, and mood.

The mended figure made up of assembling different textures, signifies the effort required to retain her identity among the emotional hardships in the foreign land. But she isn't vibrant as before in the new environment. The leaves which are illustrated by rubbing "karapincha" (curry leaves) which are native to Asia found in a Canadian store, evokes the "exotic" feeling as same as the artist herself in a foreign land. These leaves represent all the beloved familiarities found in the new environment which makes her connected to her roots. They are the ones which keep her heart vibrant despite its broken and mended nature. She clings tightly on to these comforts which gives her strength to move forward from flickering flames of emotional difficulties. This artwork showcases the emotional challenges immigrants face and tries to enlighten other fellow immigrants the importance of clinging onto their familiarities in the new country for a smoother transition. 2024 Pumudi Gardiyawasam N01566951 Visual and Digital Arts Lakeshore Social Media, Faculty/Staff, Email 24-02-2024

In these moments in the films, the subjects are quite small, so I wanted to draw something that reflected a small person in a big area. The "falling in space" aspect came naturally as I drew, and just as a fun, absurd imagery that made you question: where is he falling from? What's below him? The challenging circumstances we face throughout our lives are represented by the earthy brown backdrop. The vibrant blue green flame at the bottom of the piece signifies the glimmer of hope and strength persists deep within us which gives the strength to pierce those challenges and guide us out of the difficult situations. This flame is like a beacon of light which disperses the darkness around us. This piece shows a frozen moment of the gradual process of illumination within. The fainted yellow pattern visible throughout the piece visually narrates the moment when the darkness around us shatters and as a result, light infiltrates illuminating a path to overcome the hardships. This piece tries to address the minds of the audience to be confident about the resilience of their inner flame of hope and strength to triumph over the difficult circumstances. 2023 Pumudi Gardiyawasam N01566951 Visual and Digital Arts Lakeshore Social Media, Faculty/Staff, Email 24-02-2024

I have felt uncomfortable with images of my
body reflected back at me, seeing how everyone else perceives me, and how different that is
with how I perceive myself.
Gender dysphoria creates a disconnect between how I view myself and how others view me. With that, I never liked looking at myself in the mirror. I still don't think how I view myself is fully
reflected in this image, but maybe that's okay. Maybe there is something beautiful in how I
experience my gender completely unto myself, regardless of others. This will develop into a
series exploring gender, and how colour and texture can help people express themselves in
playful and truthful ways.
